Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8x8 or 9x9 inch baking pan with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine ½ cup dark brown sugar, 1 tablespoon cinnamon, and ½ cup flour. Cut in 4 tablespoons of softened butter until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In another large bowl, cream together ¾ cup softened butter and 1 cup of white sugar until light and fluffy, about 3-5 minutes.
  4. Mix in 1 egg and 1 egg yolk, then gradually pour in 1 cup of warmed whole milk and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract. Mix until smooth.
  5. Slowly sprinkle in 1 teaspoon baking powder, ½ teaspoon baking soda, ½ teaspoon salt, and 2 cups of flour. Stir gently until just incorporated.
  6. Pour half of the batter into the prepared baking pan, sprinkle ¼ cup of brown sugar over it, then cover with the remaining batter.
